Obituary for Ronald Nicholas Horeck

Ronald Nicholas Horeck

We are deeply saddened to share the news that our beloved father and husband Ron Horeck died on November 29th, 2017 at the age of 77. Ron was a well-respected member of the Sudbury community, where he had a successful career as a criminal lawyer for many years. A life-long Liberal, Ron was involved in politics and continued to take a strong interest in political affairs. He was born on August 2, 1940, in Capreol, Ontario to Andrew (Andy) Horeck and Jean Tremblay, and had two siblings Donna (Devlin) and Alan.

Anybody who knows Ron will know how much he loved his camp on Birch Lake. He turned an empty plot of land given to him by his father Andy into his own bit of paradise. Ron stopped at nothing to turn his camp into the special place it was, even bringing concrete across the lake to create a basketball court where we could all shoot a few hoops and where he continued to amaze us with his natural agility and athleticism. His favourite journey was the one down Highway 17 to Webbwood and then to camp. He was at his happiest sitting on the front deck with a cold beer, his beloved wife Lynita beside him, after a hard day’s work in the garden. We all have such happy memories of our time spent with Ron at Birch Lake: the days spent swimming in the lake (and the fun we had on those rare occasions we could convince Ron to get into the water with us!), the time wiled away playing euchre and hearts, the parties where he entertained us all by playing the spoons and the drums, and the nights spent around the bonfires he built. He made our childhood truly special and we are so grateful for that.

In his earlier years, Ron was a star basketball player, playing for the St. Charles College Cardinals where he and Roy Landrye formed a legendary “dynamic duo” on the basketball court. Ron then also went on to play basketball at McGill University. He graduated from Osgoode Hall Law School in Toronto in 1966. He was married to Lynita (nee Emmerson) the love of his life, and they had two children, Tanya and Paul (Rose Gorrie). He had two grandchildren Grace and Edward Perry who have fond memories of their ‘Poppa.’ Thanks for everything Dad, we know you’re out at the lake, looking over us all.
