Obituary for Ray Jessup Thomson

Ray Jessup Thomson
In Loving Memory
of
Ray Jessup Thomson C.M., E.M., C.D.
Peacefully, Friday, May 19th, 2017 at St. Joseph’s Villa, Sudbury.

Ray Jessup “Pappy” Thomson, was descended on his father’s side from Scottish ancestors who came to Upper Canada in 1834 while his mother’s Jessup family were United Empire Loyalists who fought as Jessup’s Rangers with the British during the American Revolutionary War then settled in Augusta Township in 1789. Ray was proud of his ancestry and their efforts in building this great nation.

Ray’s father, Lewis Earl Thomson, employed in the lumber industry, moved from one cutting site to another and so Ray attended eight different elementary schools as a child. During the harsh years of the Great Depression, Ray left high school to help support his parents, four sisters and brother; his efforts helped his four sisters become nurses. He moved to Sudbury in 1937, working with the Royal Bank of Canada until the commencement of World War II in 1939 when he enlisted in the Grey and Simcoe Foresters. Ray served in Canada and Europe during the war before being medically discharged in November of 1944.

Ray Jessup Thomson is survived by his wife of 74 years, D.M. “Pat” Thomson, sons Michael Ray (Nancey) of Langley, B.C., William Lewis (Marnie) of Sudbury, brother Robert Thomson (Nonie) of Waterloo, and sisters Isabelle Todd (Derek) of Kingston, and Betty Woods (Ross predeceased) of Toronto. He was predeceased by his sisters Mary Turnbull (George) of Winnipeg, and Helen Howard (George) of North Bay. Ray loved and was proud of his grandchildren Will (Meredith), David (Melanie), Kerry (Kevin), Shawna (Paul), Tamara (Pat) and Donald (Brigitte) and great grandchildren Bria, Liam, Brynn, Xavier, Drew, Olivia and step great grandchildren Aiden and Kael.

His entire life, Ray Thomson believed in hard work, social responsibility, personal commitment, and honesty in all matters. Every person, Ray believed, should be treated with the respect and decency that he or she deserved; he abhorred gossip and never insulted or demeaned any person. He was a kind and generous person who made significant donations to his church, many charities and his family. Ray was a knowledgeable, aware person who followed daily news programs and who prodigiously read current affairs materials and historical novels – he was also one of the hunt camp’s best poker players.

Ray served his country in peacetime leading or working with many local community-based associations and in wartime with the armoured corps during WWII. Ray retired from the Irish Regiment as a captain after 37 years of military service. He was instrumental in the creation of USW Local 6855 at Falconbridge Nickel Mines and served for 12 years as its President. As President, Ray Thomson initiated changes, which brought salary fairness and workplace advancements for all OCT employees. For his many efforts on behalf of this nation, Ray Jessup Thomson was invested with Canada’s highest civilian award, the Order of Canada, on his birthday, May 6th, 1988. He was a most deserving recipient.

Winston S. Churchill said, “We make a living by what we get, we make a life by what we give.” If this quote is correct and the true measure of a man’s life is the contributions he has made to the betterment of his fellow man rather than the material things he has accrued, then Ray Jessup “Pappy” Thomson was indeed a very wealthy man. He will be missed.
On behalf of all the family, a sincere thank you is extended to the staff of St. Joseph’s Villa, Ray’s home since 2006, for their years of care and support.
