Duval, Ann (Lennie)

It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of Ann Soutar (Lennie) Duval, 89 years, on Friday, May 12th, 2017 at her residence. Born in Kirkcaldy, Scotland, Ann was the beloved wife of William (Bill) Duval, predeceased, with whom she shared 57 years of love, laughter, and music. Loving mother of Debi, Don (Lise), and Greg. Cherished grandmother of Jesse, Jacob, Kylah, Tyler, and Ryan, and adoring great-grandmother of Ryland, Kaden, and Corbin. Predeceased by her parents Ann Soutar and John Lennie and brothers and sisters David, Peter, Andrew, John, Elizabeth MacKinnon, Jessie McGilvary, and Margaret Taylor. Lovingly remembered by dear sister Gladys Campbell, sister-in-law Ruth Duval and brother-in-law John Lizotte (Beatrice). Much loved aunt to many nieces and nephews. In 1929, two year old Ann, her mother and six siblings left their beloved Scotland and made the Transatlantic crossing to Canada, to rejoin their father who had gone ahead to settle in Sudbury, and who became a butter-maker at Palm Dairies. The family was soon completed with the birth of two more girls. Ann spoke fondly of her chaotic, crowded, but laughter-filled childhood, in their tiny home on Morris Street. In 1950, Ann married William (Bill) Duval and together they shared a happy, loving life surrounded by family, neighbours, and good friends. Ann resided in her home, which was built in Lo-Ellen Park by her husband in 1954, until her death. Ann was a second mother to many neighbourhood children, as she used to take a group of them down the street to swim in the lake and spent many hours playing sports with them. A true people person, Ann enjoyed working with and helping others. In good health, she was an active member of St. Andrew’s United Church. She was an excellent knitter, baker, and dancer, but will probably most be remembered for her infectious sense of humour and laugh. Her delicious Scottish shortbread cookies will be missed for generations to come. She was the life of every party or gathering. When she was a cashier at Ryan’s IGA for 25 years, she would have the longest line-ups at her cash; not because she was slow, but because everyone wanted to hear her latest joke, and she could eyeball the cost of every grocery order down to the nearest dollar before the customer cashed out, and she was the fastest parcel packer. She gave many a parcel boy an earful on how to pack groceries properly. Special thanks to the CCAC and the Bayshore nurses and PSWs, especially to dear Susan and Natalie, for their excellent, loving, and professional care given to Ann over the past few years. Special thanks also to Dr. Lesley Mitchell, Rev. Catherine Sommerville, Rev. Bill Steadman, and Sylvia Carscadden, for their support, prayers, and visits. As per Ann’s wishes, there will be no public visitation or service. Cremation at the Park Lawn Crematorium with interment in the Park Lawn Cemetery. Appreciated donations can be made to the Arthritis Society, Canadian Lupus Association, Canadian Red Cross, or any preferred institutions.
