Obituary for James Tennant Miller

James Tennant Miller
James Tennant Miller
May 17th, 1930 to February 8th, 2015

In your lifetime you could consider yourself extremely lucky if you met even a handful of people who were so special that they left an indelible print on your heart. If you had met Jim Miller in the course of your life it’s likely he’d be on that short list. For those of us who loved Jim, the world will spin a little slower and the stars will shine a little less brightly with his passing.

Jim was born in Toronto on May 17th, 1930 and moved to Sudbury at the age of 9 months with his adoring parents Dorothy (nee Tennant) and George M Miller (both predeceased). Jim attended Alexander Public School, Ridley College in St Catharines, Sudbury High and Sudbury Business College. Upon graduating Jim joined his father and partners (Cooper and Plaunt families) at Cambrian Broadcasting as Executive Vice-President where he began an exciting and rewarding career in broadcasting.

On February 14th, 1953 Jim married the love of his life – Pauline Whitehead- and to all who knew them this was a match made in heaven. Together they shared an amazing 62 years together bound by a deep love and mutual respect.

During Jim’s early years in broadcasting he packed up his family in 1960 (which by now included three daughters) and moved west to Regina, Saskatchewan to head up the newly purchased radio station CKRM as President of Western Communications Ltd. These 10 years in Regina would become a high point for Jim and he was very proud of his accomplishments during a time of tremendous change in the world. Among his proudest achievements was the hiring of the first female radio sportscasters in Canada. This bold action clearly showed Jim’s support for a changing world and in particular his support for the Woman’s Movement at a time when male supporters were few and far between.

While in Regina, Jim was extremely active and served as a Director of the John Howard Society , Director of Duck’s Unlimited Canada and was named President of the Regina Chamber of Commerce during Centennial Year - 1967. In that year Jim was honoured with the Centennial Medal for Service to the Nation presented by the Lieutant-Governor. Jim was also a Director of the Saskatchewan Roughriders Football Club and chaired one of their most successful $100 a plate fundraiser dinners. To his final day, Jim remained a loyal and devoted Saskatchewan Roughrider fan who rarely missed a game from his armchair. Both Pauline and Jim forged lasting friendships in Regina that continued even after their move back to Ontario. Of special mention are Terri and Alan (predeceased) Sangster, Betty (predeceased) and Colonel William Bliss, Marg and Darryl McLeod (both predeceased) and Florence and Arnold (predeceased) Pomeroy. And we would be remiss if we failed to mention that Jim and his long-standing secretary from CKRM – Joyce Peacock - corresponded via letter regularly.

Another highlight of Jim’s 10 year stay in Regina was the arrival of his only son George. As an avid private pilot Jim spent many hours flying with George in his Cessna 182 aircraft under the call letters CF-UDI. Jim remained a Gold Member of the Canadian Pilots and Owners Association (COPA) and passed on a lifelong love of aviation to son George. George would take this passion and “fly with it” to a new level with a career as a commercial pilot/flight instructor. No father was prouder of his son’s accomplishments than Jim. To his daughters Jim passed on a passion for reading (especially Ernest Hemingway and John Irving), Harley Davidson motorcycles (to ride beside him) and a deep love for music of all genres - but always starting and ending with the words and music of Bob Dylan.

Jim’s love of Harley Davidson motorcycles began early and he purchased his first HOG in 1947 as a teenager, he hung up his leathers after riding well into his 70’s due to the onset of Parkinson Disease. Jim was proud to have made the “bikers pilgrimage” to Sturgis, South Dakota four times and also attended Harley Davidson’s Anniversary events in Milwaukee three times with Pauline. He held a Lifetime membership in the National Harley Owners Group (HOG) and was instrumental in bringing a local HOG Chapter to Sudbury.

Jim’s military career also spanned an entire lifetime beginning with the Admiral Mountbatten Sea Cadet Corps, the Ridley College Drum and Bugle Band, and the Royal Canadian Air Force where he served from 1949 to 1950, leaving as an LAC to pursue his civilian career in the broadcasting industry. In 1950 Jim commenced his connection with the Militia by serving Sudbury with the 58th Light Anti-Aircraft Regiment, Royal Canadian Artillery (Reserve). He received a commission with the 58th Light Anti-Aircraft in 1955 but left the Regiment to relocate to Regina in 1960. He was transferred to the Supplementary Reserve until being released in 1971.

Returning to Ontario in 1970 Jim and Pauline entered the Travel Industry and Jim served as the Chairman of the Ontario Travel Industry Conference and Trustee of the Ontario Government Travel Compensation Fund. As owners of AirSea Travel Pauline and Jim worked tirelessly but also managed to travel extensively throughout the world. Some of Jim’s favourite places were London (and The Churchill Hotel), Berlin and Rio De Janeiro.

In addition to tending to his own business Jim once again devoted many volunteer hours to local organizations and charities in Sudbury. Among others he served as the President and Director of the Sudbury Regional Development Corporation (SRDC) and was a trustee of the W.E. Mason Foundation. Jim was also passionate about the idea of bringing Science North to the shores of Ramsey Lake (which he grew up on) and devoted himself to various fundraising efforts to help secure the project for Sudbury. Jim also served for 5 years as a trustee with Science North and was presented with a lifetime membership to this world class attraction. Visitors to the site can read about his outstanding contributions at the Lifetime Member interactive display on the way to the Cavern. He would be thrilled if you also visited the interactive broadcasting booth sponsored by Cambrian Broadcasting Corporation.

In December of 1998 Jim’s military career was revived when he was appointed as the Honorary Colonel of the 2nd Battalion Irish Regiment of Canada. Jim remained in this post until March of 2005 and actively served as a liaison between the civilian and military worlds. Although there were many highlights during this appointment, none meant more than his tour to Bosnia in August of 2001 with Colonel John Goudreau to visit the officers and soldiers he had come to admire so much… and to see first hand the highs and lows of this peace keeping mission. “FIOR GO BAS”

In recent years Jim wasn’t able to be as active as he once was due to a diagnosis of Parkinson Disease. He did, however, manage to keep up weekly lunch dates with his friends “The Romeo’s” (Really Old Men Eating Out). Among the group were lifelong friends (one might even say childhood friends) Alan Querney, Donald Crang, John Hartman, Bob Bryson, Terry Gaffney and Karl Vanstone and we know they’ll continue to set a special place for their good friend Jim when they gather again.

Although thankful that we had Jim for so many years there is already a huge void in our lives that will never be filled. Left behind to mourn the loss of such a great man are his wife Pauline, daughters Judith Miller-Greco (Anthony), Catherine Miller (Moreno predeceased), Melanie Miller (Jamie) and son George Miller. Jim also leaves behind 7 grandchildren: Christian Miller (Mary Ann), Jordan Miller (Jessica), Adria Madill (Robert), Marlene Kaufman (Jason), Lauren Greco, Gillian Greco and Cody Greco. He is also survived by 8 very special great-grandchildren Kai and Leila Miller, James Anthony Miller, Aidan, Ashton and Amelia Madill and Isabella and Maddison Kaufman. And certainly not least, Jim leaves behind his loving sister Janet Aston of Stittsville, Ontario whom we know Jim will continue to watch over.

Also feeling an enormous loss are Jim’s very special in-laws and best friends Geraldine and Gaston Ethier and William (Bill) Whitehead (Darlene).

Jim is also survived by sister-in-laws Ida Whitehead (James predeceased) and Jacqueline Munavish (Michael predeceased) and many loving nieces and nephews who have shared heart-warming stories with us about their Uncle Jim in the past few days. Special mention to nephew Stephen Ethier who invited Uncle Jim to every event whether it was a pool party or the Grey Cup and was only a phone call away if help was needed.

Our family’s sincerest thanks go out to all of the Personal Support Workers who provided the care necessary for Jim to remain at home and continue to live with the level of dignity so important to all of us. A very special thank you to Mike Lemair who was present for Jim’s final moments and showed such a high level of professionalism and compassion. In addition, our heartfelt thanks goes to Jennifer Lefebvre who provided in-home physiotherapy for Jim. Jen was always so encouraging and Jim sincerely looked forward to her bi-weekly visits.

At Jim’s request there will be no visitation or funeral service. A private family Celebration of Life will be held at a later date. Cremation has taken place and Jim will be interned in the Miller family plot at Park Lawn Cemetery. All arrangements made by Jackson and Barnard Funeral Home. Donations to the Parkinson Society Canada in memory of Jim would be appreciated.
