Obituary for
Hugh Alexander Doig
Hugh Alexander Doig, Q.C. 1927 - 2013
Hugh Doig passed away peacefully on October 31 in Sudbury. He will be lovingly remembered by his wife Helen Doig, nee Teahen (Chabot) and his large, happy family.
His passion for Canada and his City of Sudbury was prominent throughout his long and honourable life. Hugh practiced law in Sudbury until his death. He was a proud graduate of the University of Toronto and Osgoode Hall Law School. He recently enjoyed attending the opening of the new Osgoode Hall where he shared fond memories with colleagues.
Hugh was called to the Bar in 1954, was a life member of the Law Society of Upper Canada and was awarded recognition for his civic service in many ways, including The 125th Anniversary of the Confederation of Canada Medal for his contributions to fellow citizens, community and Canada. He is known to his family and friends as a common man with an uncommon mind. His early leadership in the community included the incumbent Presidency of the newly formed Junior Chamber of Commerce, an active Rotarian, a supporter of Labour, and a Progressive Conservative with a particular respect for Prime Ministers John Diefenbaker and Joe Clark.
As a boy, he was raised with great tradition by his grandparents Alexander and Edna Skene in the pioneering days of Sudbury. Throughout his life he spent favourite times at his family cabin on Lake Wahnapitae enjoying fishing, a great cigar and gazing at stars and the Northern lights. He will be remembered fondly by those who knew of his generous hospitality and great sense of humour.
Among his many passions were music, history, theatre, single malt and oysters on the half shell. He was a student of life; naturally curious, always well informed and occasionally opinionated.
His journey was at times challenging but always rewarding. He shared those rewards openly and graciously. He was a fearless and compassionate advocate in his law practice and along the way, made many, many good friends.
Helen was the love of Hugh's life. Together they shared joy and deep friendship in a long and happy marriage.
He is survived and loved by his children Patrick and Maryann Doig, Pamela and Len Hupet, Andrea Doig and Helmut Schollmaier, his grand daughters Jessica, Amanda and Lara and Helen's children Dr. Wayne and Joan Chabot, Vaughn and Valerie Chabot, Douglas and Nanci Chabot, Stephen and Janice Chabot, Donald Chabot (deceased) and Leann and Dr. Dru Germanoski and his grand children Dale, Trevor, Marc, Kelsey, Carly, Mathew, Lindsay, Ryan, Shawn, Stephanie, Gregory, Jeffrey, Andru, Tyler and Jacob.
What a wonderful life!
At Hugh's request there will be no service. Arrangements entrusted to the Jackson and Barnard Funeral Home.
